This is great news and I wish you every success. I'm an academic librarian and just graduated 4 years ago from library school. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have if you'd like to talk about this path.

I remember how surprised I was to see several lawyers in my Human Information Behavior class and found out how many of them had really, really hated practicing. I think they were mostly in securities law, so it made sense, but it was still a shock. I had always thought of a law degree as an end point.

In any case, I'm sure it will be a breeze for you and you'll get to study some really fascinating stuff. Good luck!

Congratulations! I guess. I've been a librarian for almost 15 years, spending the first 9 in publics and the last 6 in academia. There's a lot of hand-wringing going on in the profession about where we're all headed. It really depends on where you want to be, both geographically/personally and professionally. Keep in mind that you might have to be incredibly flexible in order to find a job. Having a specialty will help although I don't have a good feel for how law librarianship is doing. If you like being on the "front lines" (aka Reference), you'll be fine, but us Tech Services folk are a bit worried: crashing budgets and the move to electronic will cause some serious shifts in what we do. One area that needs new bodies is administration; in my library alone, the three people with most seniority (of service, not necessarily age) are all upper admins and the rest of us shiver in fear of the thought of all of them retiring at the same time. And always in demand are MLIS-holders with training and/or degrees in computer science. Good luck and have fun with it!

What kind of library work are you planning to do? Are you going to be a law librarian?

That's the plan. Actually, do you mind if I drop you a line and pick your brain? I have some questions about the actual school part, not to mention the whole job market business.

Oooooooh, I'm so jealous. The closest program to me that I've been looking at is an hour drive away 2-3 times a week. Right now I'm scheduled for an appointment with an advisor to see about the teaching license... again.

Write me a postcard from London -- it's the closest I'm going to get to it. And congratulations!
