Oh... they look safe, those sensible shoes. They are unassuming and modest... not like their wicked cousins the stilettos... who you KNOW at first glance will just do you in. No, the sensible shoes lure you in with their simplicity, their comfort. They lie in wait and let you trust them... until one day, they pounce.

This is why, even though I work for a big fancy law firm, I consistently wear my chuck taylors to and from work every day (that, and the fact that it gives me the option to actually walk to work). I keep a couple of pairs of "fancy" shoes under my desk to change into. Oh, and I refuse to take stairs anywhere. A few years ago, I had a mishap with some ballet flats with zero traction combined with a carpeted set of stairs (and, possibly, several martinis). My ankle still hurts periodically.

In law school, we had one of those big fancy marble staircases, but it was so old that it was actually worn down in places. When forced to walk up or down those steps, I would cling for dear life to the railing while all of my friends made fun of me. Until one of our classmates fell down those same stairs and broke her leg in about 6 places.
