The project I was working on has ended, and now I’m out of work. Hopefully, this will last only a few weeks, as there is another project starting once issues with the database vendor are straightened out and the firm told me they’d give me a call if I was still available.
On one hand, I have no money and this is kind of freaking me out. On the other hand, this gives me the time and the opportunity to finally, finally declutter and thoroughly clean and fix up my apartment so I can get this damn thing on the market. Plus, tax time is coming up, which means a refund. I don’t know about unemployment since I’ve been temping, but I’ll still apply.
And did I mention the sciatica from sitting all day? I’ll have a chance to get that to settle down.
Ouch. Really, really sorry. Never fun to be out of work and broke.
On the plus side, my cable bill is paid up for three months because I had it on some automatic schedule that was too much, I have a pantry full of food so I only need to get fresh bits and pieces, my Metrocard is paid for the month, I do know there’s a project starting up in a few weeks, and I don’t have to pay the dogwalker if I’m home.
I don’t know how it works in New York, but in California you can absolutely draw unemployment if you’re working for a temp agency. You have to attest that you’re constantly following up with them to find new work, but if they keep telling you there isn’t any, you can get unemployment.
if you’ve been working continuously at a job which withholds unemployment, you’re eligible (and you can add up multiple jobs to make the minimum number of months)
Cool! That will make things easier.
Hang in there. I know you’ve got a lot of shit on your plate, and we’re just anonymous commenters, but you are important. We value what you have to say, and we want you to keep saying it…!
Hear, hear! My day isn’t complete without a bit of Zuzu’s insightful (usually delightfully snarky) analysis.
There’s usually a small waiting period — in California, I think it was one week after filing that you started getting benefits, which meant it was more like two weeks to get the actual check in the mail.
Zuzu,
Contact me offline and I can ask you a few questions and help you through applying for unemployment. G-d knows I have done it a zillion times in the past, alas.
