The Scotland entries are pretty good; mostly stuff I heard from my dad or my grandparents; though Oxter for armpit had survived in my mom’s family from pre-WWI immigration.

They missed a good one, though: Crabbit, adj. meaning grumpy or angry, e.g. “My uncle Ec was the original crabbit bastard. He didnae have a nice word for anybody but wee bairns and wee dugs.”

Also, “greeting” for crying has a musical pedigree; among my favorite lyrics in Scottish traditional music is the final verse of Loch Lomond:

    The wildflowers spring
    And the wee birdies sing
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping
But the broken heart it kens
    Nae second spring again
Though the waeful may cease frae their greeting

Okay, off topic, but I just have to tell you that there was much discussion on vacation about that great book that Ann Coulter wrote…. Oldest Brother had actually gone out and bought copies for the younger brothers (hmmm… maybe you and I will get our copies at Christmas?).

I had to leave the room so I’m not sure which book they were talking about, so I’ll leave this link instead… http://www.amazon.com/Ann-Coulter-Talking-12-Inch-Figure/dp/B0006FUDL0/ref=sr_1_13/103-6012221-4063853?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1187919487&sr=8-13

(and sorry, don’t know how to use the linking codes)

Oh, lord. They’re reading Ann Coulter books now?

Not just reading, but sharing, and discussing…

Surely, its a sign of the end of the world….
