It's pronounced pogue ma hone. The hands and heart derive from the Claddagh Ring, otherwise known as an Irish wedding ring. The hands stand for friendship, the heart for love, the crown for loyalty, and the ring for eternity. Great to see you blogging Zuzu.

Heya Zuzu, congrats on the new Blog. Looks great! Vancouver ain't all that shit-hot. Trust me.

Gee Whiz, Mr. Novak, D'ya think that the presence of functioning anacronisims cluttering up the landscape being utterly obnoxious when saying some of the dumbest things in creation & getting paid more to do it in a week than the avarage slob makes in a decade might be part of the problem? Mayhap this venom that has you fudging yer Stanfeilds be tinged with resentment? Just askin'.

This is slightly off topic. For those who are kind of sloppy with handling Unicode or ASCII or are scared of those words but want to spell it right for blogrolls, the name of this fine blog replete with Gaelic orthography is PÓG MO THÓIN in all caps or Póg Mo Thóin.

I have no idea how to pronounce it but it has to be cooler than "Leck mir am Arsch."

Norbiz, the name was shortened to "The Pogues" from "The Pogue Mahones," the anglicized version of the phrase, due to label pressure.

"Wow. Even my recently deceased hundred-year-old grandmother had long since quit using the word “Negro” by the time she died."

Well, Novak's got about another 90 additional years on her. Doesn't everyone remember his first book, "Why the 13th and 14th Amendments Are Bad Ideas"?

As for the website's name, I think The Pogues also took their name from that anatomical Gaelic expression.

While Novak is passed out on the fainting couch, could someone please drive a stake through his heart, chop off his head, and stuff garlic into the neckhole? If he immediately reverts to dust, I'll be in his lair nailing his coffin shut.

Oh, was that mean? I guess Jonathan Harker was actually the antagonist and the protagonist was in fact the title character.

Yeah, if you click the link at "women, particularly," you can see the whole transcript.

Hewitt was actually reading from a Novak column from 1968, shortly after Bobby Kennedy's assassination.

Do we have the whole transcript? Sounds like Hewitt - from the references to "negro," "war protesters," "direct action" (<i>l'accion directe</i> was a phrase coined, I think, be the leftist elements of the French Resistance - and then re-used by the French before the student uprisings of 1968), and this, [quote from the post above]

"It goes on. Do you see the same thing playing out again now, Robert Novak?" Sounds like the "it" is a quote - perhaps something Novak said in the late 60's or early 70's. I suspect the entire piece might have some entertainment value.
